Questioning the Media

The Need for this site

Getting reliable information from the main-stream media is difficult. Important stories are ignored or trivialized. The purpose of this page is to act as a guide to some more reliable sources of information and analysis that have been found useful by members of Against the Wind. Of course, even the best reporting can have its biases or blind spots. As always it is important to retain one’s critical thinking in relation to any media report.

This is a new page and we are still growing it. If you have a suggestion for inclusion, send us an email at againstthewind.wvuc@gmail.com

Disclaimer: This page is coordinated by Against the Wind and does not purport to reflect an official position of Woden Valley Uniting Church, or the Uniting Church of Australia either locally or more broadly.

Important articles from news sources beyond the Main Stream Media

Medical organisation condemns bombing of Iran as illegal, reckless and destabilising

Introduction by Croakey: An emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors will be held tomorrow following the United States’ bombing of three nuclear sites in Iran. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the US bombing as “a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security”. Meanwhile, the Medical Association for the Prevention of War (MAPW) has called on the Australian Government to unequivocally condemn the attacks on Iran and to refuse to provide any related military support.

Suggestions for News Sources
from our members

Television

The standard of television is universally poor when it comes to communicating important complex stories.

We commend NITV and SBS for highlighting stories that you are unlikely to see elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the ABC has been underfunded and undermined for many years and its quality has suffered. It is hoped that over time, its quality will improve. Laura Tingle is reliable.

Print media

The Saturday Paper and Ross Gittins at the Sydney Morning Herald are both consistent such that we would recommend them to those looking for something more substantive in their morning paper.

Electronic Media

There are a wide variety of sources across the web that are both useful and in-depth to a degree not possible in most print media.

The scope of this problem is far beyond us to fully define, but we have done our best to supply a list below of sources that add to the conversation around difficult topics.

Threads

Threads is a new and emerging site. Threads tends to suppress what they regard as political content. This means that one has to more actively seek out political content. Some useful accounts to follow that provide more reliable news and analysis include.
